whoo boy! a year has passed....

hello, it's me. I was wondering if after all these months if you'd like to meet here on Diva Yarn's blog and later in the shop. to go over everything that is new. Can you read me? I'm in Port Townsend dreaming of the fall inventory I have been ordering...

Andy showing me new ribbon, trim, fabric and buttons.

Summer Time and the Warmth is Real.

It is almost here! Summer! Warmer days and nights. beaches, picnics, long walks, everything I think about all winter long! Knitting is already nestled in my car waiting for those spur of the moment beach afternoons where I can sit on a sun kissed and warmed bench and knit. Watching birds soar and water move, makes me feel as if all is well every where I get time to think and dream while knitting.

Here is a picture and a little history of Diva's home location. It is the James & Hastings

Building circa 1889. We love being in this old building. To know that we are continuing the tradition

of knitting that was also a time honored passion and necessity in 1889, makes me feel connected to many generations of knitters, crocheters and fiber enthusiasts.

Summer is around the corner and we are on the corner in town just waiting for you!

MID WAY

Somewhere out there in cyber space floats the blog posting I began a few minutes ago... someday I hope to become more masterful in how I use technology. Then there is the other side of me who says, I like people, meeting customers in the shop, face to face, in real life, in a real store with really touchable merchandise and interesting conversation and crafters and fiber lovers. I hope we never lose any of this part of our world.

Anyhow, we are mid way between winter's dark days and the spring equinox, I can feel the air being more alive, colorful. I feel inspired in what I see and as I wait for more yarn shipments in DIVA YARN, I am dreaming of warm afternoons on my front porch or at the picnic tables across from my shop, right on the beach and knitting, conversing, feeling at peace with the world around me and expressing gratitude for all of this out into the heavens. Happy almost there spring!

PS - Of course I have to have a picture of my model, the ever patient Lucas showing off my favorite cotton scarf. See you soon!

Also at DIVA YARN!

Just a quick pop in to wish you all a happy, healthy, prosperous 2024 and to say a heart felt thank you for being our customer. We hope to see even more of you in this new year and have some exciting things coming up as we return to the brighter, lighter, warmer time of the year.

We also carry fabrics in Diva, in the lobby, and recently received a bunch of the Bali cotton batiks in. These are 100% cotton and available by both yardage and in the fat quarters that we all love. I call fat quarters my instant dinner napkins. No fuss, no muss, just use them as is after removing the price tag first. Wink wink...

Aren't they pretty and inspiring? Happy New Creative Year!

Pre Holiday Busy Times

As you probably do too, I knit and crochet throughout the year and then when it comes time for gift giving, especially at the holidays, I reach under the bed for my work done box, and pull out the past year's projects. They are all finished under there and I carefully lay them out and figure who I was thinking of as I created them. I think love is put into every stitch and I usually have someone on my mind as I create. How about you? I am also content at this time of the year to come up with a couple - few new projects too for the friends that I do not have to pop something in the mail them.

I also love making stitch markers and think of my customers purchasing them and adding them into a gift of yarn or books or... This past summer, customers bought the stitch markers and then headed over to my bead shop where they purchased chains to wear them as necklaces! What a great idea! A simple, yet quality and classy gift for someone. Here are my newest stitch markers made with new Czech glass beads. ($ 3.95 each) and I am happy to have you order them to be mailed too. Give the shop a call at 360-385-4844 or www.divayarn940@gmail.com. I can even text you a picture of what is in the velvet box with other designs. Want them as earrings? That has been popular too. Let me know and I will attach ear wires.

Finally, here is quick look at our roving corner with some gorgeous new colors. Hmmm... I think I need to felt up some tree ornaments for the holiday. Happy Knitting, my fellow Diva and friends!

It is Later Than I Thought - thank you!

 July 2nd, 2023

Months and months have gone by since I last wrote on this blog. A creative journey indeed. The shop, Wynwoods Gallery & Studio in Port Townsend, Washington is now in its 32nd year and I love my shop as much as the day that the idea for it popped into my head.

The two men that helped me along the way to begin this journey have passed away. Jack Hirsch and Gary Lindheimer. Partners in life and the business, Great Expectations, that I shared retail space with. A little 12 x 12 or was it 14 x 14 back room on the left behind their big store that was filled with wondrous things. I think of them often. Of their kindness, their creativity, their hosts plant business, their amazing home, and Gary's ribald humor. Oh, but he enjoyed making me blush right up to the day that he said something and my comeback left him speechless. Something about a seagull and its mating practices. Although I don't remember the actual words I said, I am still smiling at the memory. I laughed myself silly that day and many days after.

The journey to today has been fun, full of decisions and adventure, friendship and making things. Conversations  with customers, several of whom have become some of my closest friends. Sharing how to info with fellow business owners and the best part? Meeting my husband in my tiny shop and beginning a new life with him. It has been an astounding, broadening journey.

Mostly I feel satisfied but still pursuing creativity and making a living from my craft and art. Ever since I was just a little girl, on boring long summer days out of school; I would turn to my mother and say, " I just want to make something. What should I make?" She would look at me and answer, " anything you want. "

That was the answer I needed and it has guided my life all these days and years. Thank you to my mom. What this has also taught me is that when you speak or say something, you never truly realize how your words will live on, an inspiration or encouragement to others. I have always tried to do the same with the people I meet. I encourage people to be creative, a you can do it talk when they say in my shop, " Oh, I couldn't. " Yes, you can. When a parent leans down to a child and says you can not make that, you can not have the bead or charm they have been drawn to, I remind that parent that creativity should never be squashed or shut down. Let the kid be inspired and excited! Endless mid summer afternoons can inspire hearty creative energy in a bored or lonely child or teenager.

I have loved everything about my shop. Well, maybe except the high rent but then.... This is not to say there have not been times when I have felt discouraged, worn down, weary. It is those days that the conversation with my late best friend, Howard Lampe, reverberates in my head as he would say with a firmness feigned in his voice, " Lois, go to your studio and paint. " He was right, that push was all I'd need. Love and miss Howard fiercely.

PS - I still paint. I will always paint and draw and sew and hammer and saw and ..... thank you!

Ha! This is embarrassing! I have not written on this blog in nearly a year. I am making an early resolution right now to do better in 2023 to post more. I wish I were computer proficient but alas and alack; I am most certainly not. If only Santa could drop a computer wizard into my stocking...a little guy or gal that could pop out now and again as I struggle to keep up with things on line. I like being in my shop. Seeing people face to face... having actual conversations... offering help and advice. It is a people business not a cold hard screen and keyboard business. I will do better. 2023 dawns a new year and a better outlook for all of us. Take care my fellow fiber enthusiasts and have the happiest of holidays however you choose to spend them. XO Lois

Still Here!

Yes, we are still at DIVA and as soon as I figure out how to get pictures from my phone to this laptop; I plan on posting photos of my finished pieces and all the goings on around the shop. Spring yarns begin arriving this month as well as scads of buttons. I did go a bit crazy buying buttons this year. It is still early in 2022 but buttons, new buttons at that, just made me happy!

I am going to keep this short and say we will be open tomorrow, Thursday from 11 -5. The evenings are still cold, dark and often wet so fiber projects are a terrific thing to have about. I have knitting projects, crochet work and needlepoint canvases by my chair in the living room to work on while watching Netflix.

See you soon at the shop and in the meantime, take care of yourself and be well. Lois

PS - we do require you to wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth when you are in the shop. Happy Knitting! Happy Crocheting! Happy Needlepointing! Happy whatever work you are doing for fun!

Endings and Beginnings

Today is the 27th of December, 2021 and in just a few more days this year goes away. Bye bye. I am choosing to look forward with optimism and hope for 2022. Hope that the pandemic is ending, hope that I can eat out on a restaurant and not fear getting sick, hope that I can hug people again, hope that we can gather to celebrate, rejoice in each other and in a few cases, mourn.

I am writing this even as I try to figure out the brand new laptop my family gave me last Christmas. I keep it charged but this is only the third time I have had it opened and on. Hallelujah!

This extremely, unusually frozen, snow covered day has me stuck in the house. I am also stuck in the driveway. Don't get me wrong, I love snow but in the rush to wrap up Christmas business in my shop, we neglected to get out the snow shovel from the far back garden shed or purchase deicer. Oh, well. Sometimes nature says, take a break and I am responding whole heartedly to that nudge.

I will get the bead shop open as soon as I can move about. Right now it is too icy with
snow covered ice at that, to even walk out to the studio. Hence, I was bored and decided to actually use this lap top.

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, loving, joyful 2022. See you all soon whether it is in the shop or on line. Much love and gratitude to all of you for making my life exactly what I wanted it to be these last 30 years. Making things, selling things, spreading beauty and craftiness, encouragement and love to all of you while basking in the world of all things bead and yarn and fabric and...

Chakra bells for harmony and peace.

Very Exciting!

Hey there! It truly is summer and July's full moon has passed us by and we are settling into the hot days of August. Here in Port Townsend, We are longing for more sunny days while at the same time desperately wishing for rain. We are so dry. Must be why all I want to knit with right now is green! Definitely indulging my green fever and purchased new yarn for both the shop and me.

Here is the latest yarn I took home which is currently adorning my living room knitting basket.

It is Lana Grossa's SILKHAIR, an extremely color saturated mohair silk blend that is positively dreamy. Soft, rich, great texture and the colors? Stunning. It is 70% super kid mohair, 30% silk at 230 yards for $ 14.25.

I am happy to take pictures for you and even mail you this soft textural dream yarn!

We are open Thursdays through Mondays from 11 - 5 but keep shorter hours on Sundays, 12 - 4ish.

Come see us and if you mention you read the blog... 20% off your silk hair order! Stop on in!

June! Gloriously Pretty June!

We are here and open limited hours for now. I am looking for sales help and hoping that everything is resolved in the near future. Moving along and grateful to be open in any capacity as the pandemic seems to be winding down with the availability of vaccines and the warmer weather. Soon, my knitting will be able to be out of doors on the porch, the beach or the plaza across the street from my shop.

Yarns continue to arrive and needles are fully stocked as of last week. ADDI LACE needles have been discontinued by the manufacturer so please stop in and get your selection before they are gone.

This month has treated us to some amazing weather and beautiful sky-scapes. The clouds have been impressive, the skies blu and even an early spent watching a rainbow through the sun and rain, made the month feel magical!

Give us a call if we can help with your projects or if you need some me viewing time in the shop. XO, Lois

Figuring Out Being Open Again

We are working hard to keep Diva open as many hours and days as possible while keeping ourselves safe and respecting our very minimal staffing at this time. It is our hope to remain open on Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays, 11-5:30. As the pandemic stays in our area, even with the arrival of visitors and remains low in incidences, we will be taking appointments for browsing, one on one and opening more hours. Everyone, there is a lot of yarn and buttons and notions and supplies in the shop now!

One thing I did over my stay home time was crochet and knit. Actually, I even needlepointed too and I have not done that since BP, before Phil! I knitted and crocheted with cotton yarn having never really been a fan before and I have to say, my eyes are opened! The quality of cottons we have in the shop is extraordinary! I am so excited about them, that I may work with them the rest of what will eventually be a warm summer. If you have not tried cottons, the new cottons, I urge you to check them out. Pretty wonderful stuff.

If you have been knitting, like I have and watching this week's news, I just want to say that the love of craft can unite us, the work of handcraft can center and calm us and we can be the best people we can be. I don't want to sound all mushy and sappy but I love craft. It unites me with people who may not believe or think the way I do. It makes me see another person as a person with kinder, loving eyes and more than anything, taught me compassion while bringing me peace. I wish the same for you.

Watch our FB page for shop updates and as the weather warms and clears, watch for our sale library cart outside. Did I mention we did a lot of cleaning, organizing and purging while we were closed? Well, those items have to be sold at a deep discount. So sad! HAHA! Not! You will love my cart items!

Just a note: Masks are required as is the liberal use of hand sanitizer and only one person at a time in the shop.

Opening

Diva will reopen on Thursday, June 4th from 11-5:30 and be open Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays at this time. Private appointments
may be available by giving us a call and arranging a time.

Masks are required to be worn. One person at a time in the shop. Hand sanitizer is available for use. There can be no non shoppers with you. No spouses, kids or friend who is tagging a long. No pets.

We will not have seating for in store knitting, pattern browsing or instruction. We will not be winding yarn either. So sorry! We are dealing as well as possible with the pandemic and things may change. Until then get some good yarn, and carry on!

Diva at Home

Home since March 10th, when an order by the governor closed all non essential businesses. We do not think yarn and fiber shops are non essential businesses but who am I or we to argue?
I immediately thought, upon hearing this order, of all the time I could spend knitting and crocheting and a zillion other crafty, arty, homey
things I wanted to do.

Needlepoint! Yes! I took out my supplies, things I had not looked at in 25 years, and finished one needlepoint and began two more. Of course, I need more yarn! I used to sell handpainted needlepoint canvases and taught classes in this fine old craft too. These were the days BK. Before kids. The rythem came right back to my hands and the more I danced with thread across the canvas; the more I loved the stitching I was doing!

I also found on my over crowded book shelves in the studio, my favorite how to book on needlecraft, The Readers Digest Guide. What a treasure! It literally has everything I could want to know in it with clear, concise directions and pictures. The pictures may be dated but the information is spot on. Nothing fancy, just an excellent guide! If you ever get a chance to get a copy of this book, and I think they are out of print now, you should definitely do it! I have not been disappointed ever. Plus used bookstores are a great adventure in themselves and worth a few hours of browsing time.
I refreshed my memory how to's and from this book made granny squares!
I finished ( finished, me! ) A couple of projects and many swatches for the shop. I love to knit and crochet but my baskets of unfinished projects can certainly haunt me. Having this extended time off, and I use that word, off,  loosely, has enabled me to finish things!

Crocheted shoulder wrap in cotton by Cascade Yarn. My favorite pattern, WAVE.

Finally, something knit and finished too. A hat in a fair isle free form pattern in Swans Island wool. My own hat pattern, in my favorite knitting technique, Fairisle.
Shown with flowers from a dear friend!
Soon, we will be back in Diva, the store and staff regaling you with knitting stories from our days of the pandemic quarantine. My best advice to you on all of this? Always buy yarn when you can and ALWAYS buy extra!!

Be safe. Be well. Know we count you among our very best of friends. XO

Is This Happening?

All this knitting and crafting time? Is it for real? I have actually in This stay home time, been doing a lot of knitting, crocheting and stitch work. Work that I can do not only as shop samples, but just for fun! I have all the basics done in knitting & crocheting swatch samples of new yarns and as you might have guessed, new yarns will again be coming in when the stay home time has wound done. I will leave you today with a few things I have finished and I have to say, I enjoyed it all. I am hoping that you are also finding peace, relaxation and joy in creating.
Lots of drawings that will become needlepoint  canvases.

Hat project nearly done. Swan’s Island Yarn.

A felted wool banner for our doorway.

Left on our door by an anonymous customer.❤️

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

So, here we are. In the house. Unable to do much about getting the shop open to customers. We are going to try to open up on Friday and Saturday this week with Quynn working the shop. Shorter hours, 11 - 5, just so that we may try and keep the rent paid and the employees too. We are worried that after 29 years in my beloved shop and business, that things could change so fast and we could be closing up shop. I just told someone if I have to, I will store everything and begin again. Again. The future will be brighter and the future will happen- again.

I am crafting a lot in my studio. Making things for the shop and working on getting the new inventory I purchased before the shut down ready for the next time we are open. I am also making a few things that I have said I want to do, just for me. Drawing, knitting, embroidery work and this afternoon, on this sunny much warmer day; I am going to trim up my 24 year old lavender plants before the bees really return. My grand dame rosemary bush needs a little TLC too. This will be good because Lucas can lay in the yard in the sun, and warm the sore muscles that perhaps caused the limp he developed yesterday. You can not keep a good dog down but I aim to keep him a bit quieter. As for my darling Phil, who this morning isn't quite as darling as he was a few days ago, is bored. Bored. Bored. I have to find some projects for him. Today is likely the day I will finally get out to my metal room, a separate little building on my property that was formerly the Cat House, and is now a place for my kiln, metal work and glass cutting supplies. For a year I have meant to finish getting it set up and the time is now. I can get Phil to install a couple of shelves and fix the lighting and... I am sure I will think of other things for him to do.

What are you doing? Are you making things? Feeling creative? Reading? Baking? Cooking? Walking? Hiking? Netflixing?

The thing I am enjoying the most is the quiet outside. No cars really moving. Traffic is almost nil. My neighbor, Henry who works in his yard and business with big mowers and backhoes is quiet now.  Even the other dogs in the neighborhood seem to have a reverent quiet about them. Friends in Venice, Italy say the waters in the canals are clear, the San Francisco Bay Bridge is deserted, the LA freeways moving clearly, and Seattle sounds and looks a lot like it did when I first moved here in 1976.

I am writing again on my blog and promise you pictures later. Plenty of pics already are posted on my facebook pages. Wynwoods Gallery and Lois Venarchick and Diva Yarn and The Secret Life of Lois' Happy Drawings. Check them out. Send comments. BeKind. Be nice. Be well. xo
