A Felted Experiment

Felting is one of my favorite things to do with yarn. This piece is knit on size 15 needles with Noro Kureyon yarn, a wool and silk blend. Normally, I only felt with 100% wool but you know how you get a notion.... Anyhow, I think the piece was an interesting idea in creating yarn fabric. I often just knit rectangles and then felt them, add them to my stash and on some winter's day in the not too distant future; I will cut, weave, embellish, sew and make a transformation happen - from a flat piece of knitted fabric to something that can be transformed with soap and hot water. These pieces of felted yarn are to my knitting what paints are for the painter. An element of design!

After felting, the piece has shrunk and bit, making a slightly more dense fabric but very, very soft and draping. I think this would be a lovely way to make a soft fabric for use in a baby's garment.
